Product Details

Hand made replica bird egg on stand.

This a one-off piece is a replica of one of the few surviving Great Auk Eggs in museum collections.

Each egg has its own distinctive pattern and was reproduced in fine detail, with meticulous research, from the original specimen by Peter Rowland, who is a specialist in the creation of replica birds eggs.

(Please select stand option)

Species: Great Auk

Size: 14.5 x 7.5 cm

Stand Size: 13cm Wide Oak

Identification Number: 38

Each egg arrives in a box with stand and maker’s card.

Each egg is hand made and hand painted. The size and colouring of birds eggs vary within species, the photographs of the eggs are typical examples and show the colours and patterns, including natural discolouration for an accurate replica. The accuracy of Peter Rowland's replica eggs is determined by museum photographs, real life examples and over fifty years of ornithology experience.

Attached to the reverse of each replica egg is a small identification label - to remove this could result in damage.

For legal conservation reasons, replica bird eggs must not be sold hollow and should have a number for identification to the maker’s list on each egg.  Replicas of extinct birds eggs can be hollow such as the Great Auk.

THE STORY - MODELLED ON NATURE

Original Replica Birds Eggs by Peter Rowland

“I'm still learning. You do, don't you? I'm only 75.”

In the workshop behind his cottage in the Worcestershire countryside, craftsman and ornithologist Peter Rowland creates hundreds of the most spectacular replica bird eggs, each one hand made and painted.

Modelled on rare, common and extinct originals; from the tiniest wood warbler egg marbled and speckled, to the blue green shell of the song thrush and dramatic egg of the Great Auk.

There is something miraculous and fascinating about a cabinet of curiosities full of wonders from the natural world. We have commissioned a series of oak stands (stained or natural) which fit the eggs perfectly and create a museum-style display.
