Charles Dickens (1812 - 1870): An English writer and social critic. He created some of the world’s best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. He’s credited with inventing such standard English terms such as boredom, flummox, butter-fingers and squashed. His classic novels include Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations.
These charming Fabric Folk Kits are part of an ongoing collaboration between The Shop Floor Project and paper-cut artist Amanda White. Celebrating important figures throughout history the collection includes: Picasso, William Morris, Beatrix Potter, Caroline Herschel the astrologer, Charles Dickens, Emily Dickinson, Frida Kahlo, Marie Antoinette, Oscar Wilde, Queen Elizabeth I, Dido Belle, Mary Anning the fossil hunter, writers Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters Anne, Charlotte and Emily.
Amanda White’s celebrated collages of portraits and historical houses bring together her love of old buildings and literature. Trained as a theatre designer, each paper cut feels like a set design or sketch for a costume, each one drawing you into the scene and finding more, as you take in all the detail.
