TITLE: Estuary Structures No3
ARTIST: Denise Allan
A graduate of Fine Art (painting, sculpture and installation) at Hull College of Arts, Denise Allan has long been fascinated by the habitat of estuaries; from native birds and wild flora to the derelict architecture that often sits along their banks. Her first series of Estuary Structures started in 1989 when she began to explore the decaying grandeur of Hull's old town and docks along the River Humber. The abandoned early 19th century architecture included looming, ghost-like coffee warehouses and grand merchants' town houses, sitting along the dock-side streets where William Wilberforce once lived.
This series continues her work on this subject, the prints taken from the artist's sketches of the River Thames in winter when the 'bones of the river reveal themselves in the low light'.
