Last spring, Samantha Allan explored the gardens at Brantwood, John Ruskin's former home on the steep slopes overlooking Lake Coniston in Cumbria. Over 250 acres are split into eight unique gardens which continue the many radical experiments horticulture which Ruskin began.
"As the rains came and went the new flowers and leaves on the magnificent azaleas and rhododendron soaked up the moisture and hung like giant sponges, waiting to release the captured water as soon as the spring breeze moved through. My aim was to capture this humid atmosphere, with leaf mould underfoot and tree silhouettes above"
Inspired by John Ruskin’s striking 5ft high paintings of flora and fauna which he used as teaching diagrams for his students, Samantha has created a series of limited edition, signed prints which play with scale, simplicity and boldness of form.
