STORY:

Working from her attic studio in Edinburgh, just next to the sea in the Portobello area of the city, Liz Rowland has constant views of the sea. Helpful, Liz says, for a collection about fishermen.

“I have long been drawn to the sea; despite having visited rarely as a child, I have made up for it in adulthood. I have lived in Cornwall, South Wales and now coastal Scotland ,and I am particularly drawn to fishing villages, their folklore and stories of the sea."

"I am fascinated by its expanse and the hidden worlds it holds, which became my inspiration for these plates. People wrestling enormous fish, women working in fishing villages - their work so often overlooked. Multiple generations of women would work processing the fish caught and brought in by the men. Women would work long and tiring hours doing intense and repetitive work. Their work along the UK’s coastlines was vital. This interest began in Swansea, an area historically known for the Cockle Women which I explored in a series of paintings for The Shop Floor earlier this year.”
