STORY:

Paul Young trained at Sheffield and Chesterfield College of Art in the late 1970s and early 80s and his studio is located in a Victorian Railway Station. His work is held in both public and private collections. Paul says his aim is to fulfil a need, a desire and a passion for making and his hope is to convey a joy, narrative and intrigue for the viewer.

Using combinations of throwing and handbuilding techniques, then decorated with slips and coloured glazes to achieve rich surfaces. Paul has created this collection of plates with words that surrender to the absurdity of being and the difficult times in life. The plates are a call to surrender and to accept life’s challenges - and we adore them.

Ceramics have been a part of Paul’s ‘creative heart’ and profession for over twenty-five years. During this time he has been drawn ever closer to the traditions of English earthenware, slipware and European folk art. While taking inspiration from all of these, Paul feels the strongest bond lies with the Staffordshirewares of the eighteenth century. Potters like Ralph Wood, John Astbury and Thomas Whieldon continue to please, excite and amuse him. Appearing both naive and sophisticated in its execution, their work has a charm and honesty combined with the sheer joy of just being alive.
