STORY:

British artist and designer Catherine Phelps splits her time between two homes and studios, one nestled in a lush garden in Asturias, Spain and the other in historic Salisbury.

Living between two countries is nothing new for Catherine. Originally living in London and Madrid, Catherine was (and still is) a graphic designer for the music industry, creating album covers, posters and graphics using her own distinctive illustrations.

Following a love of pottery and a course on wheel-throwing, Catherine went on to set up a ceramics studio in Asturias with six other ceramicists where they share a kiln and knowledge of clay and glazes.

It is here that Catherine works on these pieces inspired by her beautiful garden, folktales and fables. Using her bold and distinctive graphic style on hand-moulded pottery, each piece is painted with a traditional Spanish glaze named Miel Alfarero or Potter's Honey for its warming golden tones.

Catherine then uses the sgraffito technique of scratching into the glaze to reveal the clay underneath - a perfect technique for this graphic artist that also has a love for the traditional.
