THE STORY

A new series of large scale limited edition prints taken from original charcoal drawings by Denise Allan.

Exploring the ‘worlds oldest topiary garden’ Denise Allan has chosen her favourite vistas in the grounds of Levens Hall, a 17th century manor house in South Cumbria, and created a series of statuesque silhouettes in charcoal.

Along the path in front of Levens Hall is a small wooden gate leading into the gardens. What’s hidden behind the high stone wall, remains largely unchanged since the 17th century and is truly spectacular.

Dating back to the 1690s, the ten acres of gardens include the world’s oldest topiary gardens and the surreal and unique collection of ancient box and yew trees, in abstract or geometric shapes, rise up like giants from another time.

Reminiscent of the 19th century lithographs of Joseph Nash, Denise Allan’s energetic and monumental studies place the viewer firmly within the maze of topiary.
