THE STORY

Towards Flight is an ongoing collection of exclusive limited edition prints by British artist Sophie Wake and marks the beginning of The Shop Floor Project becoming the official print partner for Sophie’s paintings.

We were drawn to Sophie Wake’s work on a very emotive level. The sense of flight and movement, energy and peace is related through monumental birds with their Modernist eyes and primitive marks, flying up towards moons and suns or descending down on wind thermals, while ghostly egrets flying silently through the night and pigeons, with their dangling red feet, take off on an adventure.

A fundamental companion to Sophie’s creative process is the exploration of the rhythms of meditation to achieve what the artist describes as a “a tender and intimate aesthetic. An attempt to strip away layers of self-awareness, reaching inward to capture the beauty of raw emotion”

Originally trained as an Illustrator at Brighton University, Sophie’s innate ability for storytelling through images is clear to see in these works. What the stories are is not fixed, they ebb and flow with the viewer’s imagination, but the titles given to each work certainly offer signposts to Sophie's thoughts on the specific pieces. Titles such as Flying Home, We’re getting ready to Ascend (below) and That’s it, We’re Off lead us to create narratives that we may not have considered.

Flock of Doves (below) is a highlight in the collection. An impressive, captivating work in which we as the viewer are placed in the centre of flight itself. The doves, with their silent sense of purpose and energetic movement, are layered in a transparent light and sweep upwards into the blue sky creating a tremendously uplifting, energising image.

Sophie is constantly searching for a release of the mind when she paints in order to create a sense of emotion and otherness. This is a challenge that many artist’s spend a lifetime working on, and we hope through the collection Towards Flight to bring you more and more of these works as Sophie continues in her meditative search.
