About

Over the past two years, artist Denise Allan has been exploring the wild flowers and weeds of south Cumbria, using the 19th century volume The Flora of Cumberland as her guide.

Furthering her interest in the structure of wild flowers, Denise began a series of paper studies inspired by a collection of 19th century botanical teaching aids by Robert and Reinhold Brendel, held at The University of Aberdeen Zoology Museum.

Her studies were initially to develop ideas for paintings, however as a Fine Art sculpture graduate, they quickly led to a fascination with using the simple combination of paper and wire to produce structures in their own right.

Working quickly and intuitively  she builds shapes that have a spontaneity that captures the fragile nature of wild flowers found in the wetlands and craggy Cumberland fells. Presented in hand blown glass domes on heavy wooden bases they inhabit their own space, bringing a quiet authority and poise to each piece.
