ABOUT

Eleanor Meredith is a British artist originally from the wilds of Scotland. Currently based in a studio hidden at the top of an old cinema in Hackney, east London where she works as both an illustrator and ceramicist.

Eleanor has a gift for the economy of line, achieving a suggestion of the subject matter rather than a replication of it. Artists such as Matisse and Picasso believed that the more they could say using the least strokes possible, the more powerful the work was. We can see this approach in Eleanor’s porcelain sculptures.

In Eleanor’s case she has taken her skill as an illustrator and applied it to ceramics. Drawing with porcelain she creates minimal, exaggerated forms with evocative names such as Curvy Puma, Pensive Elephant and Mighty Lion. The Relaxed Gorilla (below) has a real sense of weight as he plants his hands and feet firmly on the floor, whilst the Suspicious Otter certainly looks a little weary.

A lecturer in illustration at Norwich University of Arts, Eleanor also runs workshops at The BFI Animation Academy, V&A Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. She is also co-founder of The Loop, a celebrated magazine for children which encouraged thinking and making in its readers. The concept is currently evolving into an activity book with Thames and Hudson.

Eleanor’s work has only been featured in House & Garden magazine, in a feature about art pottery.
