ABOUT

‘What I seek to find is some way of recapturing and distilling feelings of childhood, loss and fleeting moments from the everyday.’

Lily Irwin is an Irish artist based in London with a masters degree in Children's Book Illustration from Cambridge School Of Art.

Working in pencil, pastel, collage and textiles, Irwin’s work invites the viewer into a strange and beautiful world, one of both wanderlust and domestic comfort; travellers cross frozen lakes, dogs are taken for walks, cats curl up on kitchen dressers and characters hide under tables with story books.

Titles such as Kitchen Sink on an Autumn Night and Golden Light through the Trees on an October Night they reveal the artist’s sensitivity to time, light and the seasons. Irwin’s work offers both a sense of excitement and slight unease, two elements that are always present in the best children’s stories. Her work asks us to look into a world of poetry and narrative, of things that have just been or are about to be.

Lily Irwin has exhibited widely and most recently at the highly prestigious Bologna Children’s Book Fair. She has been shortlisted twice for the Contemporary Watercolour Competition, Royal Watercolour Society, Daler Rowney Prize. She is currently participating in the Drawing Year 2020, at The Royal Drawing School.
