Hand thrown, altered and painted jug
Part of the Throwing Paintings collection
(After the painting: Jug & Eggs by Mary Fedden)
The Shop Floor Project commissioned their long-time collaborator Katrin Moye to create a collection of ceramics based on her reserach-residency at Lakeside Arts: Nottingham University's public art gallery and museum. Throwing Paintings is a tribute to three 20th century female artists: Mary Fedden, Winifred Nicholson and Vanessa Bell. In Moye's experimental new work she has played a game of Chinese whispers with the original paintings, turning the two-dimensional paintings of ceramic jugs and vases back into three-dimensional versions.
Through Katrin Moye's careful study of the original paintings, she allowed herself time to contemplate the brushstrokes, colour and composition of each form within the painting. As a skilled ceramicist, Moye knows how to throw a perfect pot, but the project goes beyond perfection. So she threw the 'perfect pots', then began to adapt them, making them appear more two-dimensional, slicing the front off and lowering the tops. Slighly distorted and loosely painted, Katrin's new pieces stand as moving tributes to three of Britain's most important 20th century painters.
