With a Fine Art degree from London Guildhall University, Samantha Allan went on to study for a masters in Museum studies, where her love for ancient artefacts grew. This series of original paintings for The Mudlark (The Shop Floor Project's summer exhibition) are detailed studies of the artist's collection of pottery shards. Found on 'mudlarking' trips to various rivers, lakes and beaches, they are inspired by the Dutch still life paintings of the 17th century, each one framed in a deep, dark frame which are handmade, especially for these paintings.
"I wanted each one to feel like an object in itself; a dark box which contains this precious fragment of history. The ground is painted in a mix of browns, blues and greens to create a mud-like appearance, with the fragments shining out. The mud of the estuaries protect and conceal the fragments and the daily tides reveal and conceal them in the continuous rhythm of the foreshore"
