About

A new collection of ceramics from Katrin Moye takes inspiration from the collection of 18th century Delftware and Faience pottery seen by the artist on a visit to the Bowes Museum in County Durham last spring.

“Since exploring these museum pieces, I seem to have immersed myself in the 1700’s. I’ve been working on a project about the novel ‘The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy’ by Laurence Sterne and on a project exploring the designs created by French Huguenots silk weavers in Spitalfields. All referenced in this new collection”

Using Korean wolf-hair brushes Katrin has been developing her Garland design, practising making the leaf patterns with a single brushstroke.  “I love the way the cobalt blue underglaze in particular carries the sweeping mark of the brush with it; a fluid, expressive stroke permanently fixed under the glaze.”

Hand thrown with a dark, chocolate black earthenware clay, Katrin then pours a thin white slip over as a ground for the decoration.  “The way the slip pools and drips on the dark clay hides and reveals the throwing lines and marks I leave with my hands, and is my attempt to echo the hands of the makers of decorative art in the pre-industrial era.”
