THE STORY | Painting Pots by Unity Coombes

Painting Pots by Unity Coombes is an extraordinary collection of new paintings, both enormous and small in scale.

(Initial sketches, ideas for shape, colour and pattern)

Exploring the cut-out silhouetted shapes of various vessels from 17th century ginger jars to tea caddies, vases and jugs, each one a fresh study of the ceramic form so familiar to our collective memory.

Unity is a master of mixing delicate painting with bold forms, colour and pattern, and in this series she has culminated this approach in a gloriously triumphant collection.

Recently relocated to rural Devon, Unity has set up studio in an Edwardian shop with beautiful light flooding through the shop window and the village church for a view.

There seems something very apt about Unity painting in an old shop; her work, with its ‘pick and mix’ of colour, pattern and shape, is as tempting as a striped paper bag, bursting with all of your favourite sweets.

These uplifting works, which feel both incredibly modern and historical, are full of charm and character.
