ABOUT

Denise Allan regularly sketches the skies around her studio in South Cumbria in the North West of England, recording the myriad of colours formed by spectacular storm cloud systems which are swept in from the North Atlantic.

Last winter she gave herself the task of painting the sky each day - ‘at the same time and the same location'. So in the quiet late afternoons between December and early March she left her studio and climbed Hoad Hill, on the edge of the South Lakeland fells, and looked west over the Levens estuary toward Morecambe Bay.

The resulting series of small, original paintings in watercolour and gouache on paper are all observed from this one point, many of them studies of the large storm clouds that seemed ever-present in those few weeks. Skies with complex layers of colour and texture, ever changing weather systems and moods are the perfect muse for an artist known for her atmospheric works.

Co-founder of The Shop Floor Project, Dense Allan is a BA (Hons) Fine Art graduate (painting, sculpture and installation) from Hull College of Arts. She has long been fascinated by the habitat of estuaries and their sweeping skies. This Storm Cloud series is part of her ongoing work to document the Levens estuary.
