About

British artist Kate Black creates work with a seemingly childlike aesthetic and has a growing number of collectors as well as prestigious prizes and exhibitions.

Born in Walsall, an industrial town in the Black Country, Kate sites the history of the area as an enduring source of inspiration. “I recall visiting The Black Country Living Museum from a young age and was instantly enthralled by the skills and crafts from the Industrial Age. Rag-rugs, chain-making, life along ‘the cut’ (or canal), the workers’ cottages – it’s these places that act as a catalyst for ideas and inspiration when it comes to making artworks. Interiors of the cottages, the colours, structures, forms and shapes all inform the ingredients I use to make artworks, be it drawings, paintings, textile or three-dimensional pieces.”
