A Cupful of Craft

This winter we have launched a special collection celebrating the humble cup. In these strange times we look for comfort in the everyday, and a handmade cup can be a really special thing: to take out in the garden, to have waiting for you in the morning, to offer to someone who pays a visit.

We have invited several artists to create a series of unique cups for this collection including Fliff Carr, Yu Kobayashi, Katrin Moye, Ginny Sims, Michaela Gall and Emily Mitchell.

THE MAKER’S STORY

American ceramic artist Ginny Sims' new collection consists of large cups, platters and jugs all in Sims' unusual and striking forms. Her work seems on the one hand very familiar - 18th century tankard shapes, servants' quarters bowls and jugs, yet the colour palette and smudgy stormy glazes feel almost Rothko-like, the combination is compelling.

As a teacher of ceramics and art history at Minneapolis College it’s not surprising that her distinctive and original work looks to past for inspiration. She collects page after page of shapes and ideas in her prolific sketch books stretching back to her time honing her craft from master potters in England, Italy and Scotland.
