            Fresh from out of the kiln, a new collection of Catherine Phelps beautiful ceramics draws upon the ceramicist's love for Spanish history and showcases a new glaze combination which is inspired by Elizabethan ‘blackwork’ embroidery.

            The Private Life of Birds is a collection inspired after Catherine visited the Monastery of Santa Clara in Tordesillas in Castilla y León and saw a 16th century wall painting depicting the ‘mad queen’ Joanna of Castile.

            The Cherub Plates were inspired by a church in Salinas, the Spanish town close to the artist’s heart.  In particular, a towering structure, known as a reredos, was the focus of the inspiration, with its cherubs, angels, stars and scroll work.

            To look into one of Ajiro’s paintings is to get lost within another world, one full of parties, weddings in forests, mandrakes, winged-cardinals, puppets, flowers, mysterious writings, kings, queens and knights, forest creatures and tree roots.

            Kosuke Ajiro’s work is full of mystery. As if from the pages of an ancient manuscript, the figures and creatures seem to have walked out from illuminated margins.

            THE PAPER CUTTER

            Riding in on a sugar horse, past the gingerbread makers and bakers, through the yarn dyers of the Hebrides, up the stairs of a doll’s house, through the butcher’s shop and into the florist, Marion Elliot’s new collection of paper cut collages are a love letter to the vernacular crafts and architecture of this island.

            Marion’s work is deeply rooted in her love of folk art; shop fronts, fairgrounds, hand-painted signage, advertising imagery and typography, tattoos, workers’ guild banners, mottos, and commemorative mugs are all cited as ongoing inspiration. In fact her Herefordshire home and studio is a testament to this love, with collections displayed around her home.

            The subjects for this new collection are reminiscent of the beautiful book The High Street by Eric Ravilious which celebrated early 20th century shops and signs. Marion takes us from the high street with incredible depictions of butcher’s shops, florists, milliners and into traditional rural and coastal craft workshops of basket makers, farriers, sailmakers and dyers.

            A collection of contemporary Harvest Jugs & Platters by Christina Serra Delmar.

            These giant globe-shaped pitchers made from slipware, originated in the 18th century Devon and were made to hold cider or ale for the centre of farmhouse tables to celebrate the harvest, a wedding or even the launch of a ship.

            The jugs were highly decorated with simple or stylised motifs and subjects ranged from the natural world, to royal emblems, such as unicorns and flags, and rhyming verses that referred to farming, drinking, the perils of the sea.

            Based in her studio in Herefordshire, the patterns, themes and motifs for Christina’s contemporary harvest jugs have been found within her rural day to day life. Beginning life as lively sketches, she shares with us “the birds and trees of my garden, chickens, the folk art and toys and poems and songs of my children, stills from our kitchen table”.

            Inspired by the ancient craft of pargetting, a type of lime plaster decoration applied to the outside of houses in medieval England. The decoration often depicted local folklore such as the legendary figures of Tom Hickathrift and the Wisbech Giant.

            Inspired by the elaborate ‘ship hair’ or ‘pouf à la Belle Poule’ of 18th century Paris.  It was popularised by Marie Antoinette, who wore a hand-crafted miniature ship atop her head to commemorate the French ship Belle Poule’s victory in 1778.

            The Halo is inspired by the paintings of early Renaissance artists such as Fra Angelico, Lorenzetti and Piero della Francesca with their angels, kings and queens adorned with halos.

            Designed in-house, our handmade tin decorations begin life as pencil drawings inspired by characters seen on frescoes in early English country churches and in 18th century 'shell grottos'. These sketches are then developed with skilled artisans in Mexico.
